Cold Wave Emergency! ... Strengthening On-Site Guidance for Open-Field and Facility Vegetable Crops in Hamyang-gun, Gyeongnam
Field guidance for crops in preparation for cold wave affecting greenhouse vegetables.
View original image[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Hamyang-gun, Gyeongnam Province, has launched a "Cold Wave Preparedness Operation" to prevent damage to facility crops.
As the cold wave continues with temperatures dropping to minus 10℃ recently, Hamyang-gun is strengthening on-site crop management guidance to prevent low-temperature damage to open-field crops such as onions and facility vegetables such as strawberries.
In the case of onions, there is concern about frost damage caused by the ground heaving during sudden temperature drops, which can kill the onions. To prevent this, the heaved soil should be pressed down, covered with soil, and additional non-woven fabric should be placed to keep warm.
For facility strawberries, operating heaters to maintain a minimum temperature of 5℃ or higher is necessary to prevent damage such as deformities caused by low temperatures.
For fruit trees, young trees are vulnerable to cold damage, so it is recommended to wrap the lower part of the central branches with straw or non-woven fabric.

A county official warned, "Appropriate measures are needed for each crop to prevent low-temperature damage to winter crops. In particular, for facility vegetables, lowering the temperature to save heating costs can reduce yield due to deformities and growth retardation."
