[AKYUNG Poll] 4 out of 10 People Say "Wealth Gap is Serious"
[Asia Economy Reporter Geum Bo-ryeong] Four out of ten Koreans identified 'wealth disparity' as the most serious social conflict.
When asked, "Among the various internal conflicts in our society, which do you feel is the most serious?" 43.4% responded with "wealth disparity." In a multiple-response setting, the second most cited was "ideological conflict" (29.8%), followed by "gap between the metropolitan area and provinces." Next were "gender conflict" (24.2%), "regular vs. irregular employment issues" (23.8%), "regional conflict" (23.1%), "generational conflict" (23%), "labor-management conflict" (15.4%), "don't know" (2.6%), and "others" (0.5%).
Regarding wealth disparity, a high percentage was observed across most demographics, with the highest at 55.4% among those in their 30s. Those in their 40s accounted for 48.1%, 50s for 42.6%, 60 and older for 39.9%, and 18-29 years old for 34.6%.
By region, Gangwon and Jeju (55.2%) felt wealth disparity was the most severe. Other regions included Gwangju, Jeonbuk, and Jeonnam (46.2%), Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam (45.9%), Daejeon, Sejong, and Chungcheong (45.3%), Seoul (44.7%), and Gyeonggi and Incheon (43.1%).
Regarding gender conflict, higher response rates were seen among the 20s and 30s age groups compared to other age groups. Those aged 18-29 and those in their 30s both recorded 42%, while those 60 and older (8.1%), 50s (15.4%), and 40s (25.7%) were relatively lower.

This survey was conducted by Asia Economy through Win-G Korea Consulting, targeting voters aged 18 and older nationwide from the 28th to 29th of last month. A total of 1,009 people responded, with an overall response rate of 10.7%. The survey method was 100% mobile phone virtual number, conducted via telephone interviews. The sample was extracted using weighted values by gender, age, and region based on the resident registration population as of the end of January 2021 from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (cell weighting). The sampling error is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
