First Omicron Deaths in Gwangju... Two Women in Their 90s with Second Vaccination
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] An Omicron variant confirmed case has died in the Gwangju area. This is the first domestic case.
According to quarantine authorities on the 3rd, two women in their 90s who died after being diagnosed with COVID-19 were found to be infected with the 'Omicron' variant virus.
One of them was a patient hospitalized at a nursing hospital in Nam-gu where a cluster infection occurred. After being diagnosed, she received treatment at Bitgoeul Jeonnam National University Hospital and died on the 29th of last month.
The other also became infected through the same transmission route and died on the 27th of last month while receiving treatment at Jeonnam National University Hospital.
It is known that none of them had underlying health conditions.
The cumulative number of Omicron confirmed cases in the region has been counted as 122.

Omicron is a COVID-19 variant virus with 32 mutations in the spike protein, first reported around November 26 last year in southern Africa. It is currently spreading rapidly in more than 80 countries worldwide.
