Europe's COVID-19 Cases Surpass 100 Million Cumulative Total
[Asia Economy Reporter Seolgina Jo] The cumulative number of COVID-19 cases in Europe has surpassed 100 million.
According to AFP on the 1st (local time), based on its own tally, a total of 100,174,753 confirmed cases have been reported across 52 countries and autonomous regions in Europe, including Atlantic coastal countries, Azerbaijan bordering Central Asia and the Middle East, and Russia. This accounts for about one-third of the total confirmed cases worldwide (288,279,803 cases).
In Europe, following the spread of the Delta variant last year, the new Omicron variant is rapidly spreading recently. More than 4.8 million new cases were confirmed in Europe just last week. Countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Greece, and Portugal have continued to break their daily records for the highest number of confirmed cases.
On this day, England in the UK recorded 162,572 new confirmed cases, breaking the previous highest record set just a day earlier. In France, 219,120 new cases were reported, maintaining over 200,000 cases daily for four consecutive days. Denmark's infection rate reached 2,045 cases per 100,000 people.
