The Most Powerful Submarine Equipped with 10 SLBMs to Be Released
[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] A submarine equipped with 10 vertical launch tubes for submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBM) is being constructed.
On the 30th, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering announced that it held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Jangbogo-III Batch-II second ship and has begun construction. The groundbreaking ceremony is the first step in shipbuilding, involving cutting the steel plates to be used for the hull and praying for the prevention of safety accidents during the construction period.
The 'Jangbogo-III' project refers to the development of next-generation Korean submarines over 3,000 tons. 'Batch' refers to a group of ships built of the same type, with performance improvements from Batch-I to II and III.
The Navy plans to sequentially build the latest Korean submarines, starting with three 3,000-ton class ships including the Dosan Ahn Changho, followed by three 3,600-ton class ships in the second phase, and three ships over 4,000 tons in the third phase.
The 3,600-ton Batch-II submarine to be built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering is a diesel-powered submarine measuring 89 meters in length and 9.6 meters in width. It is larger in tonnage and about 5.5 meters longer than the Batch-I first ship (3,000-ton class lead ship), Dosan Ahn Changho, which was delivered to the Navy last August. While the Batch-I class submarines are equipped with six vertical launch tubes for submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBM), the Batch-II class will have up to 10 launch tubes due to its increased length.

The Batch-II class submarine is explained to be the second in the world among 3,000-ton class submarines to be equipped with lithium batteries, providing a higher level of stealth and underwater operational capability. Additionally, with a high domestic parts localization rate of up to 80%, it is expected to have secondary effects such as domestic job creation and enhanced export competitiveness.
