Jinju City Selects 175 Public Contest Projects Amid COVID-19 Crisis
Additional 186.7 Billion KRW Secured for National Road Funding
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Jinju City, Gyeongnam Province announced that in 2021, it was selected for 40 public contest projects conducted by central government ministries, Gyeongnam Province, and other external organizations, securing 52.7 billion KRW in national and provincial funds, bringing the total to 175 projects and 219.9 billion KRW in national and provincial funds secured during the 7th local government administration.
Compared to the 6th local government administration, which secured 33.2 billion KRW through 39 selected public contest projects, the number of selected projects increased by 136 (▲348%), and the amount of national and provincial funds secured increased by 186.7 billion KRW (▲562%).
Looking at the major public contest projects selected during the 7th local government administration, in 2018, Jinju secured national and provincial funds of 10.4 billion KRW for the Innovation City Public Institution Linkage Development Project, 1.6 billion KRW for the Jangdae Market Arcade Installation Project, and 3.1 billion KRW for the Geumgok-myeon Basic Living Base Development Project, promoting regional development.
In 2021, Jinju achieved results by securing national and provincial funds of 18 billion KRW for the Jungang District Urban Regeneration New Deal Project; 6 billion KRW for the Special Public Contest Project for Dangerous Buildings, promoting the construction of a multipurpose child and welfare center on the site of the former Yeongnam Department Store; 2.4 billion KRW for the Smart City Solution Expansion Project, promoting the Smart City Development Project; 1.5 billion KRW for the Vulnerable Area Living Condition Improvement Project; 1.2 billion KRW for the Developmental Disabilities Specialized Workplace Establishment Project; 1 billion KRW for the Drone Demonstration City Construction Project; and 18 billion KRW for the Aerospace Public Specialized Science Museum Construction Project.
Securing national and provincial funds through public contest projects is an important channel to obtain the insufficient budget for the smooth promotion of regional pending projects, and Jinju City's prompt response to the diversified project selection methods of central government ministries stood out.
This is interpreted as the result of Jinju City's full efforts to explain the necessity and validity of regional pending projects to the National Assembly and central government ministries and to secure selection and funding for public contest projects despite various difficulties such as COVID-19.
