'70s Iconic Protest Folk Singer' Yang Byeongjip Dies at 70...
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] It was recently revealed that Yang Byeongjip (70), known as one of the three major resistance singers of the 1970s, has passed away.
According to the music industry on the 25th, Yang Byeongjip was found dead at his home in Yongsan-gu, Seoul on the 24th.
On that day, popular music critic Park Seongseo had planned to meet Yang Byeongjip at a cafe, but Yang did not show up even after the scheduled time. The cafe owner, finding this unusual, reportedly called 112 (emergency services).
The police who arrived at the residence discovered the deceased.
Yang Byeongjip was regarded as a symbolic figure of resistance folk music. He first appeared before the public in 1972 while working as a securities company employee, gaining attention by participating in the '1st Folk Contest' hosted by 'Monthly Popsong.'
In 1972, he began to make a name for himself by standing on the stage of the '1st Millstone,' a cradle for folk singers, alongside Song Changsik, Kim Minki, Yang Hee-eun, and Sawol and Owol.
In the 1980s, he ran a music cafe called 'Mono' near Ewha Womans University. This place was also where the band Deulgukhwa was formed.
He later emigrated to Australia but returned to Korea in 1999, releasing his 7th album 'Fade Away' in 2005. He had been steadily active, including releasing the album 'The Sound of Yang Byeongjip' last February. His written works include 'The Man Who Met Bob Dylan' and 'The Car That Runs on Two Wheels.'
