Wonjun Signs Contract Worth Approximately 90 Billion Won
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hyowon] Wonjun announced through order announcements on the 20th and 23rd that it has signed supply contracts with Zhejiang Pohua New Energy, invested in China by POSCO Group, and SK Materials Group Fortin, invested domestically by SK Group.
The contract amount totals approximately 90 billion KRW, which is 150% compared to recent sales (2020). The current order backlog, including this contract, is in the 150 billion KRW range. Wonjun is a company that provides process and heat treatment solutions necessary for the production of secondary battery materials and entered the KOSDAQ market on October 7.
According to a Wonjun official, "Through this contract, despite the COVID-19 pandemic environment, we achieved about 80 billion KRW in orders last year and reached orders in the 130 billion KRW range this year. Currently, investments in secondary battery materials are continuously being made overseas, including Korea, Europe, and the United States, and negotiations for new and expansion projects in the industry are ongoing, so the order outlook for next year is also very positive."
In particular, the contract with SK Materials Group Fortin was signed in a turnkey manner for process equipment and heat treatment equipment for producing silicon-based anode materials, which are attracting attention as next-generation battery materials. This not only marks active participation in the mass production scale silicon-based anode material investment project but also signifies providing optimal process technology for secondary battery material production lines beyond just supplying heat treatment equipment.
Although silicon-based anode materials have advantages such as excellent energy density, the market has not grown compared to carbon-based anode materials due to several drawbacks. However, as global technology development to overcome these issues is actively progressing, expectations are rising, and mass production technology has been required simultaneously. Wonjun has invested in developing heat treatment technology, which is key to producing silicon-based anode materials, centered on Onejoon GmbH located in Germany (photo). From the research stage to pilot scale, they have successfully supplied various heat treatment equipment and have been preparing for mass production, which has finally borne fruit.
The core of Wonjun's heat treatment solution is to provide the optimal method to produce materials with characteristics and added value by supplying high-temperature heat and gases to general raw materials such as secondary battery materials. In other words, since the quality, production volume, and productivity of each material vary depending on the heat treatment results, it is classified as a core technology in the materials industry. Its importance is increasing as material technology advances and production scale expands. Wonjun is known to have supplied the most heat treatment equipment for secondary battery cathode material production among domestic companies and has a track record of turnkey orders and supply for cathode material production processes. Additionally, Wonjun acquired Eisenmann Thermal Solutions, a German company possessing original heat treatment technology for carbon-based and silicon-based anode materials, securing advanced technology. Based on this, they expanded their business area to heat treatment equipment for anode material production and were recognized for this achievement by receiving the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Award as an 'Excellent Company Securing Global Core Technology' on the 14th.
