Seven Eleven Launches Trial Sale of High-Sugar Domestic New Variety 'Sodammi Sweet Potato'
[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] Convenience store 7-Eleven announced on the 23rd that it will conduct a pilot sale of the domestically developed native sweet potato variety 'Sodammi Sweet Potato,' researched and developed by the Rural Development Administration.
Among approximately 3,000 7-Eleven stores selling roasted sweet potatoes, the pilot sale will first take place at 20 stores with excellent sales performance, followed by plans to gradually increase production and supply through a strategic partnership with the Rural Development Administration.
Sodammi means 'plump and appetizing' in appearance. Under the management and support of the Rural Development Administration, Sodammi sweet potatoes are being pilot-produced in major sweet potato producing regions nationwide, including Haenam, which has abundant sunlight. Compared to the most widely distributed domestic sweet potato variety (Beniharuka), Sodammi has a smooth exterior with superior marketability, characterized by a soft texture and strong sweetness. The average sugar content is 29 Brix, comparable to commercially available honey sweet potatoes. It also has high storability, allowing for long-term storage and year-round shipment of products with consistent quality.
Roasted sweet potatoes have been a representative winter snack at 7-Eleven since their full introduction in 2016. This year, sales of roasted sweet potatoes have increased by more than 28% compared to the same period last year, receiving much love from many consumers.
