Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Advances Autonomous Navigation Technology Demonstration
Autonomous Navigation Test Vessel 'Danbi' Naming Ceremony Held
Full-Scale Development of Autonomous Navigation Technology Begins
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) has embarked on demonstrating future autonomous ship technology.
DSME recently held a naming ceremony for its autonomous test vessel 'Danbi' and announced on the 16th that it will actively develop the autonomous test vessel to lead and prove future ship technologies.
DSME's autonomous test vessel 'Danbi (DAN-V)' will undergo demonstration operations in Lake Sihwa, Gyeonggi Province, and the West Sea near Yeongjongdo Island. By the end of this year, it plans to test autonomous navigation and safe navigation-related technologies such as AR, VR, and remote control in conjunction with the smart ship land control center at the Siheung R&D Campus. The name Danbi embodies the hope of the company's employees who expect it to play the role of a refreshing rain overcoming difficulties.
The company is continuously discovering and dedicating itself to developing future core technologies, including jointly developing key safe navigation technologies with Seoul National University. Autonomous ships are regarded as one of the promising future technologies that will change the maritime transport paradigm, often called the 'Tesla of the sea.' These vessels can perceive their surroundings and navigate autonomously. Alongside autonomous vehicles and drones, they are evaluated as a key category of unmanned mobile platforms, with global research and development actively underway to maximize navigation safety.

Meanwhile, the current Korean shipbuilding industry possesses core technologies for autonomous and safe navigation but lacks experience in actual shipboard installation and testing. DSME plans to install these technologies on actual test vessels, verify their performance, secure core autonomous navigation technology capabilities, and proactively prepare for the future autonomous ship market.
