Gwangju Seo-gu Holds Meeting on Large Street Tree Management Measures
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Shin Dong-ho] The Seo-gu District Office of Gwangju Metropolitan City (District Mayor Seo Dae-seok) announced on the 15th that it recently held a meeting with related parties at the Seo-gu District Office to establish a reasonable plan for handling large street trees that were planted long ago and have grown significantly.
The meeting was held with the participation of officials from the city’s Parks and Greenery Division, members of the Urban Forest Creation and Management Review Committee, and interested residents.
Since the large trees became a contentious issue recently due to their removal for road expansion in the Yeomju Jugong Housing Reconstruction and Maintenance Project, the meeting was organized to find reasonable responses balancing the public functions of large street trees and alleviating residents’ inconveniences when transplanting or removing them.
Through this meeting, Seo-gu gathered opinions on handling large street trees, including ▲validity verification during consultations for large-scale street tree transplantation ▲expanding transplantation locations from public to private areas ▲considering street tree transplantation in green spaces created during redevelopment and reconstruction projects.
Additionally, if redevelopment or reconstruction projects proceed in the future, the district plans to consult experts regarding the utilization of street trees and ensure sufficient communication time with residents at the early stages of the projects.
A Seo-gu official stated, “If guidelines for handling large street trees are established at the Gwangju city level, we will promote street tree management reasonably by forming a sufficient consensus with citizens.”
