'Former Senior Secretary Kang Ki-jung to Receive Criminal Compensation in Case of NIS Female Employee Detention Acquittal'
[Asia Economy Reporter Bae Kyunghwan] Kang Ki-jung, former Senior Secretary for Political Affairs, who was involved in the 'NIS Female Employee Detention Incident' ahead of the 2012 presidential election and was acquitted by the Supreme Court, will receive criminal compensation.
According to the legal community on the 14th, the Seoul Central District Court Criminal Division 51 (Chief Judge Ko Yeon-geum) recently ruled that the state must pay Kang the criminal compensation of 4,219,000 won.
Kang, who was a member of the National Assembly from the Democratic United Party in December 2012, was prosecuted on charges of detaining NIS employee Kim at her home for over thirty hours after receiving a tip that NIS staff were posting illegal election-related comments online.

However, the court acquitted him, stating that it was difficult to find that the defendant had the intent to detain or that the victim was in a state of detention. The Supreme Court also confirmed the acquittal, and Kang subsequently claimed criminal compensation.
