The joint venture battery factory 'Ultium Cells' with General Motors (GM) will be established as a smart factory first.
LG Energy Solution announced on the 14th that it signed a 'Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for Smart Manufacturing Implementation' at its headquarters in Park One, Yeouido, Seoul the day before. Attendees included Kwon Young-soo, Vice Chairman of LG Energy Solution, Cedrik Neike, Member of the Siemens Group Managing Board and Vice Chairman and CEO of the Digital Industries Division.
Through this agreement, LG Energy Solution will apply Siemens' cutting-edge smart factory technology to the second plant of the Tennessee Ultium Cells, a GM joint venture, laying the foundation for building a smart manufacturing plant. Starting with this, the smart manufacturing implementation will be expanded to all business sites.
Siemens will support all processes to accelerate LG Energy Solution's digital innovation strategy. The two companies will also collaborate on developing hardware, software, and digital application training programs linked to 'LG IBT,' the world's first battery specialized educational institution established by LG Energy Solution. They plan to cooperate on a Digital Twin roadmap as well. Through this, LG Energy Solution aims to provide products with the highest quality on time at all global sites and establish a foundation for rapid future expansion.
Smart manufacturing is considered an essential element of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), a global management focus. Once smart manufacturing is established, an ICT-based real-time monitoring system will be implemented throughout the battery production process, enabling the mass production of high-efficiency and high-quality products.
Kwon Young-soo, Vice Chairman of LG Energy Solution, said, "Smart manufacturing is a core capability that must be secured to enhance battery quality and maximize the efficiency of the manufacturing supply chain. Through the MOU with Siemens, a global leader in smart factory technology, we will digitalize and optimize battery manufacturing technology to provide the best service to our customers."
