[Kim Maengnyeong's Golf English Conversation] "What is a twilight green fee?"
Twilight means 'the time of sunset.'
Most golf clubs in the United States, especially in small to medium-sized cities, operate a 'Twilight Rate' throughout the year. They set start times around 3 to 4 PM, after the golden hour, and offer golfers special discounted fees. This usually covers about three hours before sunset.
The green fees are less than half the regular price, but play usually ends around holes 13 to 15 due to sunset, meaning completing all 18 holes is not possible. There are also inconveniences such as sprinklers operating or green maintenance work. If you use a cart, it must be returned by 6 PM. Nowadays, there is even a 'super twilight rate' for golfers who only play 9 holes. Cost savings are attractive.
Golfers who seek out cheap rates are called 'twilight hunters.' Information about twilight rates can be easily found in newspapers. When making a reservation, you need to consider various factors to be practical. Above all, the green fees are cheaper, and since the courses are quieter, it is good for practising on the course.
A: Good morning, Hawaii ABC Golf Club, John speaking. How can I help you?
B: I would like to play 9 holes. Do you have a reduced 9 hole rate?
A: I’m afraid not. But we have a twilight rate beginning after 3 o’clock in the afternoon.
B: Oh, that sounds good. Are there any restrictions?
A: You can enjoy the reduced green fees, but you will not be able to finish 18 holes because of the sun going down. Also, sprinklers will be operating randomly around the course.
B: I see. That does not matter.
