Kim Taebong, Chairman of Gwangju Autonomous Police Committee, Visits Traffic Information Center and Conducts On-site Inspection
Listening to On-site Police Officers' Difficulties
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] On the morning of the 2nd, Kim Taebong, Chairman of the Gwangju Metropolitan City Autonomous Police Committee, visited the Nam-gu Traffic Information Center to listen to the difficulties faced by on-site police officers and rode along in an unmarked patrol car to inspect police enforcement activities against traffic violators.
The Traffic Information Center employs 34 people, including staff from the Gwangju Police Agency, Gwangju City Hall, the Road Traffic Authority, and service contractors. The center's main tasks include traffic control, traffic signal management and operation, real-time traffic information collection and provision, and maintenance of traffic facilities.
In particular, the Traffic Information Center houses the newly introduced undercover patrol unit this year to prevent traffic accidents and conduct enforcement duties.
The undercover patrol unit consists of traffic police officers from the Gwangju Police Agency who operate one undercover patrol vehicle in shifts 24 hours a day, day and night. Their main duties include preventive patrols and enforcement at traffic accident-prone and vulnerable areas, on-site guidance and enforcement against drunk driving, motorcycle accident-causing behaviors, and reckless or retaliatory driving.
From March to last month, they enforced a total of 2,937 cases, including 1,193 cases of center line violations, 983 signal violations, 675 cases of not wearing helmets, and 86 other cases.
On the 26th of last month, the system was equipped with an additional speed measurement device on the front vehicle during driving to enable enforcement against speeding vehicles. After a three-month warning period for speeding vehicles, actual enforcement is scheduled to begin in March next year.
Chairman Kim Taebong said, “The undercover patrol car continuously enforces traffic violations throughout Gwangju city 24 hours a day,” and added, “Citizens should voluntarily comply with traffic regulations as violations can be detected anytime and anywhere.”
