Cultural Cities is a project that supports regions in planning and realizing their own urban cultural environments. The designated sites are selected based on the Regional Culture Promotion Act. The criteria focus on regional development utilizing cultural resources and improving residents' cultural quality of life. Local governments designated as preliminary cultural cities must carry out preliminary projects for one year using their own budgets. After evaluation and deliberation of the preliminary project performance by the Deliberation Committee, if finally designated as a Cultural City, they receive up to 10 billion KRW in national funding over five years. A Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism official stated, "Forty-four locations applied this year," adding, "We conducted a fair and strict evaluation of the necessity and direction of promoting Cultural Cities, the validity of development plans, and feasibility." The official also said, "Among the eleven sites designated this time, six are planned to be finally designated." Currently, twelve local governments have been designated as Cultural Cities, including Bucheon in Gyeonggi, Wonju, Gangneung, and Chuncheon in Gangwon, Cheongju in Chungbuk, Wanju in Jeonbuk, Cheonan in Chungnam, Pohang in Gyeongbuk, Yeongdo district in Busan, Seogwipo in Jeju, Bupyeong district in Incheon, and Gimhae in Gyeongnam.
