Human Rights Commission Awarded 'A Grade' in Evaluation by Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] The National Human Rights Commission of Korea announced on the 1st that it received an 'A grade' in the quinquennial accreditation review conducted by the Sub-Committee on Accreditation of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI).
The Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions, established in 1993, is a worldwide coalition of national human rights institutions, currently comprising 118 member organizations. The GANHRI Sub-Committee on Accreditation evaluates and assigns grades based on how faithfully national human rights institutions comply with the "Paris Principles," which set standards regarding the independence, broad mandate, and investigative powers of these institutions. An A grade signifies full compliance with the Paris Principles, while a B grade indicates partial compliance. The results of this accreditation review determine the status and standing of the respective national human rights institution within the international community.
The Sub-Committee reportedly highly evaluated the efforts of the National Human Rights Commission to promote and protect human rights in this review. However, the Commission was recommended to establish a "Single Independent Selection Committee" to improve the election and nomination procedures for commissioners and to secure financial autonomy.
