Gangwon-do to Focus on Developing '7 Specialized Crops'... 49.8 Billion Won Invested Over 5 Years
Development of New Varieties, High-Quality Production, Cultivation Technology Development, Processing, and Distribution System Establishment
[Asia Economy Reporter La Young-cheol] The Gangwon Provincial Agricultural Research and Extension Services, together with the Rural Development Administration, is set to intensively foster seven specialized crops in Gangwon Province.
According to the provincial agricultural research institute on the 30th, a total of 49.8 billion KRW will be invested over the next five years to enhance the external competitiveness of seven crops: corn, deodeok, wild garlic, potato, paprika, tomato, and chamdanggui.
For corn, new varieties will be developed in line with consumer trends, and efforts will be strengthened to domestically replace popcorn raw materials, which are mostly imported.
Deodeok and wild garlic will each have varieties developed that feature their distinctive taste and aroma, as well as fast-growing types. For wild vegetables, focus will be placed on developing hydroponic cultivation technology that allows year-round harvesting.
Potatoes will have varieties developed according to their uses to strengthen intermediate material processing, while paprika will focus on establishing smart farm technology that can stably produce during the high-temperature summer season and on pioneering new overseas markets such as China.
Tomatoes will have cultivation techniques subdivided by cropping type to increase the smart farm adoption rate to 20%, and chamdanggui will establish a seed production and distribution system, develop cultivation techniques, and revitalize mountain area distribution centers.
