Omicron Emergency... "Deployment Unit Booster Shot Schedule Unconfirmed"
[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] As the new COVID-19 variant 'Omicron' spreads overseas, the military is considering additional vaccinations (booster shots) for deployed units.
On the 29th, Ministry of National Defense spokesperson Bu Seung-chan said at a regular briefing in response to related inquiries, "(For overseas deployed units) various methods are being considered, including direct vaccination abroad if necessary."
The Ministry of National Defense is reviewing multiple options for deployed units stationed in South Sudan, the Gulf of Aden, Lebanon, and other locations, depending on the circumstances and conditions of the deployment sites.
Spokesperson Bu explained, "We are establishing a booster shot vaccination plan considering all options such as the UN, port calls, overseas and domestic vaccinations," adding, "The timing of the vaccination has not been finalized."
Meanwhile, additional vaccinations for all domestic military personnel will begin on the 27th of next month. Whether to strengthen social distancing measures within the military, such as restrictions on leave and visits due to the domestic spread of COVID-19, is expected to be decided in connection with government policies.

On the same day, 13 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed within the military, of which 12 were breakthrough infections confirmed more than two weeks after completing vaccination. The cumulative number of confirmed cases in the military is 2,305, with 594 of these being breakthrough infections.
