[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] The promotion of the Coupang logistics center in Hamyang-gun, Gyeongnam is progressing smoothly, increasing the potential for growth as a logistics hub city.
On the 22nd, Hamyang-gun announced that County Governor Seo Chun-soo visited Coupang headquarters to meet with CEO Park Dae-jun, confirmed the progress of the logistics center construction, listened to difficulties, and held a cordial talk.
Coupang plans to invest 72 billion KRW on a site of approximately 55,000 pyeong in the Sin-gilri area of Hamyang-eup, constructing one logistics center building with a total floor area of about 23,000 pyeong. The center will introduce state-of-the-art facilities, self-developed logistics software, artificial intelligence (AI), and advanced logistics equipment.
Once the Hamyang advanced logistics center is completed, it will be centrally located among Coupang’s logistics centers being built in Gwangju, Daegu, and Gimcheon, serving as a hub for logistics and distribution in the Yeongnam and Honam regions.
The Hamyang Coupang logistics center project is currently undergoing various administrative procedures for construction, including designation of district unit plans and strategic environmental impact assessments. In September, a resident briefing session was held with local residents to create an eco-friendly logistics center.
CEO Park Dae-jun said, “We will strive to help revitalize the Hamyang regional economy through the construction of the logistics center.”
Governor Seo Chun-soo responded, “The Coupang logistics center requires prompt construction to revitalize the local economy, which has been depressed due to COVID-19, and to create large-scale employment. We plan to grow into a logistics hub city by attracting logistics companies centered on Coupang to the investment leading district selected by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport last August. Coupang’s role is crucial for this.”
Meanwhile, Hamyang-gun currently has two highways intersecting, placing major metropolitan cities such as Daejeon, Daegu, and Gwangju within an hour’s reach. With the opening of the Hamyang-Ulsan highway under construction and the completion of the Dalbit Inland Railway included in the national railway network construction plan, it is expected to establish itself as a transportation hub in the southern inland region.
Based on this geographical advantage, various efforts are being made to overcome the crisis of regional extinction and move toward a sustainable growth city by attracting logistics and automobile parts industry cluster companies.
