[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Jo Young-shin] Chinese state-run media fiercely criticized U.S. President Joe Biden for reversing his stance regarding the holding of the 2nd Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue (EPPD) between the U.S. and Taiwan.
According to Chinese media such as the state-run Xinhua News Agency and Global Times on the 22nd, the U.S. and Taiwan held an economic-related video conference on the 22nd (U.S. local time) attended by Jose Fernandez, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State for Economic Affairs, Wang Meihua, Minister of Economic Affairs, and Wu Zhengzhong, Minister of Science and Technology. Hosted by the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO), the meeting is expected to cover a wide range of economic topics including global supply chains, 5G networks, cybersecurity, and science and technology.
The Global Times criticized President Biden, saying, "The U.S. president who told Chinese President Xi Jinping at the U.S.-China summit that he 'does not support Taiwan independence' has betrayed that promise in less than a week by changing his words." It further claimed that this meeting clearly violates the summit agreement and sends the wrong signal to Taiwan separatists.
Yuan Zheng, Deputy Director of the U.S. Studies Institute at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, condemned the meeting, stating, "This meeting can be seen as a de facto official exchange between the U.S. and the island of Taiwan," and called it "a clear betrayal of the 'One China' principle by Biden."
Liu Fengyu, spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, said, "The U.S. must cease all forms of official exchanges and contacts with Taiwan," warning, "China can mobilize practical measures to safeguard China-U.S. relations and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait."
There are also prospects that the U.S. is likely to further strengthen economic relations with Taiwan to revitalize its own economy.
Zhang Yuansheng, Deputy Director of the Taiwan Research Institute at Xiamen University in China, predicted, "The U.S. is highly likely to seek cooperation in the 5G communication technology sector as part of its technological competition with China."
The Global Times criticized Taiwan authorities, including President Tsai Ing-wen, who advocate separation from mainland China, accusing them of misleading the Taiwanese people by describing this meeting as the "highest-level regular economic dialogue between the U.S. and Taiwan."
Among Chinese government-affiliated scholars, there is also analysis suggesting that the U.S. might resume negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Taiwan.
Li Haidong, Director of the Institute of International Relations at the China Foreign Affairs University, criticized President Biden, saying, "The U.S. is highly likely to strengthen economic relations with Taiwan in various ways to revitalize its own economy," and added, "The Biden administration is assisting Taiwan authorities such as President Tsai, who undermine mainland development."

Meanwhile, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs downgraded diplomatic relations with Lithuania to the level of charg? d'affaires after Lithuania approved the 'Taiwan Representative Office,' which is effectively an embassy. In a statement, the Ministry warned, "The Lithuanian government must bear all consequences from now on," and cautioned, "Do not underestimate the firm determination and resolute will of the Chinese people to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity."
