This is Kang Sung-hoon’s (34, CJ Logistics, photo) nightmare. On the 21st (Korean time) at the Seaside Course of Sea Island Resort in Georgia, USA (par 70, 7,005 yards), during the third day of the 9th event of the 2021/2022 PGA Tour season, the RSM Classic (total prize money $7.2 million), he struggled with 6 over par and fell to a tie for 63rd place (1 under par 211 strokes). Taylor Gooch (USA) leads with 16 under par 196 strokes, while Sebastian Mu?oz (Colombia) and Seamus Power (Ireland) are tied for second place at 13 under par 199 strokes.
Kang started from a tie for 15th place, 6 strokes behind the leader, recording 3 birdies, 3 bogeys, and one sextuple bogey. He was cruising with “stepping stone birdies” on holes 5 and 7, but bogeys on holes 10 and 14 erased all the strokes he had gained. Although he seemed to change the momentum with a birdie on the 15th hole (par 5), he collapsed with a sextuple bogey on the 16th hole (par 4), taking 6 strokes more than the regulation number. He lost his ball twice, wandered through wasteland and rough, and finished the hole with “8 on 2 putts.”
On the 17th hole (par 3), he also made a bogey by hitting his tee shot into a bunker. His fairway hit rate was only 57.14%, and his greens in regulation rate was 55.56%. Among the 71 players who advanced to the final round, he is tied for 63rd place, near the bottom. Gooch scored 3 under par, maintaining his position at the top of the leaderboard for the second consecutive day. He leads the group tied for second place by 3 strokes. Gooch joined the regular tour in 2018 but has yet to win a tournament. World No. 17 Scottie Scheffler (USA) fell to a tie for 63rd place.
