Wanju-gun Holds Commemorative Event for Designation of Wibong Waterfall as Scenic Site

[Wanju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] Wanju-gun held a ceremony on the 19th to commemorate the designation of the Soyang-myeon Wibong Waterfall area as a nationally designated cultural asset scenic site.

The event was held on a small scale at the Soyang-myeon Wibong Fortress Experience Center, attended by Wanju County Governor Park Seong-il, Ahn Hyeong-sun, Director of the Cultural Heritage Conservation Bureau of the Cultural Heritage Administration, and local residents.

The Wibong Waterfall is characterized by water originating from Wibong Fortress cascading down in two stages, and the water flowing between large rocks below the waterfall creates a pothole river environment.

It is said to be the place where Kwon Sam-deuk (權三得, 1771?1841), a master of pansori during the late Joseon Dynasty, practiced, giving it historical and locational significance.

The Wibong Waterfall is the first scenic site designated in Wanju-gun.

Meanwhile, during the event, a report on the designation process and preservation and utilization plans for the Wibong Waterfall scenic site was presented, and Director Ahn Hyeong-sun of the Cultural Heritage Administration handed over the management organization designation certificate to Governor Park Seong-il.

Additionally, cultural heritage administration commendations were awarded to Cha Mi-ja (Soyang-myeon) and Kwon Won-taek (Dongsang-myeon) for their contributions to the scenic site designation.

Since 2015, Ms. Cha has actively promoted the Wibong Waterfall by providing historical and cultural exploration guidance and explanations, while Mr. Kwon, who runs a restaurant nearby, has taken the lead in maintaining the environment of the Wibong Waterfall.
