[Asia Economy Reporter Kangwook Cho] Hyundai Engineering & Construction announced on the 18th that it has been included in the ‘2021 Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI)’ World for 12 consecutive years and was selected as the global No. 1 in the construction and engineering sector for the second consecutive year.
The DJSI World index is a benchmark given only to the top 10% of companies with the highest ESG management levels among the top 2,500 companies worldwide by market capitalization. Hyundai Engineering & Construction’s inclusion signifies recognition as an excellent global leading company. The DJSI (Dow Jones Sustainability Index) is a sustainability investment index jointly developed by Dow Jones, the largest financial information provider in the U.S., and RobecoSAM, a Swiss international investment firm. It annually publishes evaluations not only of companies’ economic performance but also their environmental and social sustainability.
With this selection, Hyundai Engineering & Construction has been named the global best company ‘Industry Leader’ in the construction/engineering sector a total of nine times. The company explained that this is a significant achievement as it is the first in the industry.
In particular, the 2021 evaluation in the construction and engineering sector saw a widening score gap among evaluated companies due to new questions and expanded verification reasons, resulting in only three construction companies worldwide being honored with inclusion in the World index.
DJSI evaluates sustainability in three ESG areas: environment, society, and governance. Hyundai Engineering & Construction received high scores through initiatives such as appointing female outside directors, expanding eco-friendly energy businesses and coal phase-out resolutions, strengthening safety and health management, enhancing ethics and compliance management, conducting ESG management diagnosis for partner companies, and expanding disclosure of non-financial information. The company operates a company-wide sustainability management council quarterly and elevates ESG risk deliberations to the board level.
Notably, Hyundai Engineering & Construction became the first construction company this year to structure its report based on the World Economic Forum (WEF)’s ESG disclosure framework, the ‘4P Promotion System (Prosperity, Planet, People, Principle).’ It also reflected detailed initiatives and non-financial performance in areas such as strengthening global competitiveness, responding to climate change, enhancing safety and health implementation, and reinforcing value chain capabilities. Alongside disclosing various ESG information, the report included a ‘Coal Phase-Out Declaration Stakeholder Letter,’ formalizing the internal policy to completely exclude new participation in domestic and international coal-related investments and construction projects, informing stakeholders about the implementation process.
Hyundai Engineering & Construction earned an integrated A grade for four consecutive years in the 2021 ESG integrated evaluation conducted by the Korea Corporate Governance Service (KCGS), which assessed 765 domestic listed companies in the environment, social, and governance sectors. This year, the company received A grades in all ESG categories, actively promoting company-wide ESG management for sound sustainable growth.
Additionally, Hyundai Engineering & Construction was ranked first in the comprehensive construction sector at the ‘2021 Korea Sustainability Index (KSI)’ hosted by the Korean Standards Association. The KSI, since 2009, is the largest stakeholder-based survey in Korea that evaluates domestic companies’ social responsibility implementation levels and sustainability based on the international social responsibility standard ISO26000.
