[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) held a beacon fire reenactment ceremony on the morning of the 17th at the site of the Achasan beacon mound located at the summit of Bonghwasan.
Notably, this beacon ceremony reenactment event was the first of its kind held in Jungnang-gu, and it was held on the Day of the Patriotic Martyrs to commemorate the spirit of independence activists who used beacon fires during the March 1st Movement under Japanese colonial rule, adding greater significance.
The event opened with celebratory performances including lively folk songs, traditional ballads, and a demonstration of Taekkyeon, a traditional Korean martial art. The beacon fire ceremony was led by the duty and relief teams composed of the chief officer and the beacon soldiers. The ceremony began with the guard ritual protecting the beacon mound and the patrol ritual around the beacon mound, followed by the relief ceremony and the lighting of the first beacon fire (the beacon fire during peacetime).
Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, who attended the reenactment, said, “Bonghwasan is a meaningful place that holds the history of the Bonghwasan Dodanggut ritual along with the beacon mound. Taking this beacon fire reenactment as an opportunity, we will continue to put more effort into projects utilizing local cultural heritage as well as the discovery, restoration, and management of cultural heritage.”
The Achasan beacon mound site located at the summit of Bonghwasan (160 meters above sea level) (Seoul Metropolitan City Monument No. 15) is a beacon fire station belonging to the 1st route of the 5th beacon fire system during the Joseon Dynasty. It played an important role as the final beacon in the process of transmitting signals from Hamgyeong Province to the final destination at Mokmyeoksan, alerting invasions by northern tribes.
