Intense COVID-19 Spread in Gwangju Middle Schools One Day Before Suneung Exam
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] One day before the College Scholastic Ability Test, the spread of COVID-19 among students in the Gwangju area is becoming serious.
According to Gwangju Metropolitan City on the 17th, as of 2 p.m. on that day, 23 people were classified as new COVID-19 confirmed cases.
They include 1 person related to a nursing hospital in Seo-gu, 5 people related to a middle school in Gwangsan-gu, 2 people related to an intercity sports competition, 5 people related to confirmed cases from other cities/provinces, and 10 people confirmed through symptomatic testing whose infection routes are under investigation.
Since the day before, confirmed cases have been rapidly increasing related to a middle school in Gwangsan-gu, and due to chain infections, students from another middle school have also tested positive.
The quarantine authorities conducted a full investigation of 898 people at the said middle school.
In Gwangju, confirmed cases appeared at A Middle School in Buk-gu and B Middle School in Gwangsan-gu the previous day, leading to tests for 242 and 938 people, respectively.
So far, 3 people related to A Middle School and 14 people related to B Middle School have been confirmed positive.
Regarding the nursing hospital in Seo-gu, where confirmed cases have been steadily occurring recently, 1 person was confirmed positive on this day, bringing the cumulative confirmed cases to 68.
The quarantine authorities are classifying the movements and additional contacts of confirmed cases based on CCTV, GPS, and other data.
