According to the county on the 17th, 'Jangheung Cheongwansan,' located between Gwansan-eup and Daedeok-eup, has long been known as one of the five great mountains of Honam, attracting many visitors who come to enjoy its outstanding scenery.
The mountain peaks such as Guryongbong and Gujeongbong form a unique landscape with towering strange rock formations resembling stacked stone pagodas, harmonizing with the silver grass clusters along the ridges to create a magnificent view.
Additionally, from several peaks and ridges like Yeondaebong and Hwanhidae, the archipelago scenery unfolds, and on clear days, Jeju Island can be seen across the sea.
Cheongwansan has served as a central mountain in the Jangheung area from the Baekje, Goryeo, to Joseon periods, used for installing beacon fires (bongsu) or conducting state rituals, regarded as a sacred mountain.
Many records related to Cheongwansan have been passed down, including 'Cheongwansan-gi' featured in 'Sinjeung Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam,' 'Yeollyeosilgiseol,' and 'Dongmunseon.' Moreover, numerous cultural tourism resources such as Cheongwansa Temple, Tapsansa Temple, and traditional houses in Bangchon Village are distributed nearby, highlighting its outstanding historical and cultural value, leading to its designation as a scenic site on March 8.
The designation event began with a congratulatory performance titled 'Beautiful Jangheung,' followed by a lecture from a natural heritage expert and a screening of a Cheongwansan video. The main ceremony included reports on the management progress and preservation plans for Jangheung Cheongwansan (by the head of Jangheung-gun Cultural Tourism Division), presentation of the national cultural heritage management organization certificate, awards for contributions to natural heritage discovery and designation, an opening address (by Ahn Hyung-soon, Director of Cultural Heritage Conservation Bureau, Cultural Heritage Administration), and commemorative speeches (by Jeong Jong-soon, Jangheung County Governor).
Meanwhile, to prevent COVID-19, attendance was minimized, and the event was broadcast live through Jangheung-gun’s official YouTube channel so that many citizens could watch. The event content can be viewed again via YouTube replay.
