Yeosu Veterans and Security Organizations Strongly Oppose the Cancellation of the Integrated Memorial Tower
Yeosu City Council Budget Cut Condemnation Statement
[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Sim Kyung-taek] When the Yeosu City Council in Jeollanam-do cut the budget related to the construction of the integrated memorial tower, veterans and security organizations in the Yeosu area strongly protested.
The Yeosu City Council's Budget and Accounts Committee decided on the 15th to cut the entire 37 million KRW service fee budget for the construction of the integrated memorial tower in the review of the 5th supplementary budget for this year.
In response, 16 veterans and security organizations in Yeosu held a press conference in front of the Yeosu City Council and strongly opposed the decision.
Through their statement, these organizations claimed, "Although we have repeatedly advocated for the integration of the memorial towers, the memorial tower honoring the spiritual patriotic martyrs has not been integrated and has been neglected due to the vested interests of certain politicians, causing the patriotic spirit that forms the foundation of Yeosu City to crumble."
In particular, they pointed out, "The existing facility is old, cramped, and severely corroded. The underground memorial tablet room suffers from severe leakage, requiring constant operation of drainage pumps. Additionally, the parking lot is too small, making it difficult to even hold the Memorial Day events, highlighting many problems."
They also stated, "We strongly condemn the forces that exploit the spirit of the 3-Yeo integration for the construction of the integrated memorial tower to use it in next year's local elections."
They urged, "Yeosu City should remember the spirit of the 3-Yeo integration and immediately implement the construction of the integrated memorial tower with equal status restoration under the special law for the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident."
