Jeonnam Police Strictly Crack Down on Five Major Election Crimes for Next Year's Two Major Elections
Up to 500 Million Won Reward Possible for Reporting Election Crimes
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency announced on the 12th that it has formed a special investigation team for election-related crimes ahead of the 20th presidential election in March next year and the 8th nationwide local elections to be held in June.
The special investigation team for election crimes consists of 191 investigators from the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency and 21 police stations in the jurisdiction. They plan to strengthen intelligence gathering on various illegal activities related to elections and continue strict and fair crackdowns in accordance with relevant laws.
In particular, they have designated the following five major election crimes that seriously undermine election fairness: ▲bribery ▲spreading false information ▲public officials' involvement in elections ▲election violence ▲illegal mobilization of groups, and plan to strictly crack down on them.
For these crimes, the 'zero tolerance principle' will be applied regardless of political party or status, with judicial processing. They will thoroughly investigate and crack down not only on the perpetrators but also on those who planned or ordered the crimes and the sources of illegal funds.
Whistleblowers reporting election crimes will be strictly protected to prevent exposure of personal information (Article 262-2 of the Public Official Election Act), and rewards of up to 500 million won may be paid to those who report or provide information on election crimes (Article 11-3 of the Police Duties Execution Act).

A representative of the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency said, “To realize fair elections, not only the police's efforts but also active reporting and tips from the public are important,” and urged, “If you become aware of any illegal election activities, please actively report them to 112 or the nearest police station.”
