Seoul Fire Academy Conducts Fire Suppression Test for 'Mobile Cooling Water Tank' for Electric Vehicle Fires

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the 10th, Seoul Fire Academy announced that on the 2nd, at the parking lot of the Future Knowledge Park in Ochang, Chungbuk, it conducted a live fire suppression test of a prototype 'mobile water tank' for electric vehicle fire suppression together with the Chungbuk Fire Headquarters, Korea Fire Industry Technology Institute, and Korea Fire Equipment Manufacturing Center.
Due to the characteristics of electric vehicle batteries, once they catch fire, they are not easily extinguished. Although water cooling methods are used, extinguishing is difficult, and sometimes the fire reignites even after being put out. In Europe, including Germany, containers that can submerge burning electric vehicles are used, but they have the disadvantages of high costs and requiring many operating personnel.
Accordingly, Seoul Fire Academy signed an equipment development cooperation agreement with the Korea Fire Industry Technology Institute and Korea Fire Equipment Manufacturing Center in March and developed a mobile cooling water tank, which was tested this time. The mobile cooling water tank is assembled by wrapping the underside and sides of the vehicle with two layers of waterproof and fire-resistant fabric sheets, weighs 30kg for easy transport, and is reusable.
In this test, in addition to the submersion method using the water tank, fire suppression tests were conducted using water spray (cooling extinguishing), fire extinguishing foam (smothering extinguishing), and foam extinguishing agents (cooling and smothering), while measuring the temperature changes inside the vehicle and battery pack (extinguishing effect) for each suppression method.

Seong Ho-seon, head of Seoul Fire Academy, said, "The results of this electric vehicle fire suppression test will be used to establish manufacturing standards for the mobile cooling water tank and to develop tactics for electric vehicle fire suppression," adding, "It will also be reflected in the fire academy's textbooks to prepare for the upcoming electric vehicle era.”
