President Moon: "The Government and People Will Protect Firefighters' Lives and Health"
On Firefighters' Day, SNS Message... "The Public Deeply Trusts Firefighters"
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] On the 9th, President Moon Jae-in marked the 59th Firefighters' Day by stating through a social networking service (SNS) message, "The government and the people will together protect the lives and health of firefighters."
President Moon said, "The people deeply trust firefighters. The safety of firefighters themselves is also very important," emphasizing this point.
He added, "On the occasion of the 59th Firefighters' Day, I sincerely thank the dedication of 160,000 firefighting families and volunteer firefighters. Firefighting knows no day or night, no seasons. I hope today will be a day to think about the hard work of firefighters."
President Moon recalled the words of a firefighter who has been serving for two generations.
"A firefighter must rescue two people at the scene: the victim and oneself. I will become a great firefighter who saves both."
President Moon urged, "This year, many firefighters have exhausted themselves while doing their original duties and also supporting quarantine efforts with all their strength. Please take a moment today to say 'thank you' and 'well done' to firefighters."
He explained, "This year, firefighters rescued over 64,000 citizens at approximately 830,000 disaster sites. In COVID-19 quarantine efforts, they demonstrated promptness by transporting about 420,000 people, including confirmed and suspected cases, overseas arrivals, and vaccination-related individuals. Volunteer firefighters also did their best to ensure public safety at 187 vaccination centers."
President Moon said, "Today's Firefighters' Day ceremony is held at the planned site for the National Fire Hospital. The National Fire Hospital will open in 2024 as a 'disaster base hospital' to assist firefighters with medical treatment, rehabilitation, and mental stability."
