Chinese Communist Party to Hold 'Historical Resolution' Before Xi Jinping's Reappointment... Expected to Emphasize Justification for Long-Term Rule
[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-seop] The Chinese Communist Party is beginning the process of elevating President Xi Jinping to the rank of the third leader following Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping.
According to major foreign media on the 5th, the 6th Plenary Session of the 19th Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (6th Plenum), held from the 8th to the 11th, is expected to produce the "Third Historical Resolution." Chinese state media have also reported that the resolution will "deliberate on the major achievements and historical experiences of the Party's 100 years of struggle."
There have only been two historical resolutions in China so far. The first was the "Resolution on Certain Historical Issues," passed at the 7th Plenary Session of the 6th Central Committee in April 1945, which established Mao Zedong's leadership of the Party. The second was the "Resolution on Certain Historical Issues of the Party Since the Founding of the People's Republic," adopted at the 6th Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee in June 1981, which firmly established Deng Xiaoping's reform line.
This new resolution is expected to emphasize the legitimacy of Xi Jinping's long-term leadership system. It will summarize the 100-year history of the Communist Party in three stages and honor Xi as the third-generation leader who opens a new era following Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping.
Meanwhile, it is anticipated that at the 20th Party Congress next fall, President Xi's "third term" will be effectively confirmed.
