[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] Yoon Seok-yeol, the presidential candidate of the People Power Party, stated that he plans to visit Gwangju for about one or two days. This visit appears to be intended to apologize to the citizens of Gwangju regarding the controversy caused by his remarks defending Jeon Du-hwan during the presidential primary race.
On the afternoon of the 5th, after being officially nominated as the People Power Party's presidential candidate at the 2nd party convention held at the Baekbeom Kim Koo Memorial Hall in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, Yoon made these remarks during a press conference.
Earlier, last month, Yoon sparked controversy by saying, "People in Honam also say that Jeon Du-hwan was good at politics." Following this, he expressed regret but then posted a so-called "dog apology" photo on Instagram, which drew further criticism.
Yoon added, "Regarding the visit to Gwangju, I am currently discussing with party officials in Gwangju, and the schedule will be announced soon."
Meanwhile, on the same day, Yoon was confirmed as the presidential candidate, surpassing Assemblyman Hong Joon-pyo, former Assemblyman Yoo Seung-min, and former Jeju Governor Won Hee-ryong. This primary was conducted by combining 50% party member votes and 50% public opinion polls. The combined vote percentages were Yoon 47.85%, Hong 41.5%, Yoo 7.47%, and Won 3.17%, respectively.
Yoon received 210,034 votes from party members, significantly ahead of Hong's 126,519 votes. In the general public opinion poll, Hong led with 48.21%, while Yoon had 37.95%.
