View original image[Haenam=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Hyun] Yoon Jae-gap, member of the National Assembly (Democratic Party of Korea, Haenam·Wando·Jindo), urged Moon Sung-hyuk, Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, on the 3rd to establish the (tentative name) National Ttangkkeut Marine and Fisheries Museum.
Currently, three national marine museums are in operation: the National Maritime Museum in Busan, the National Marine Biodiversity Institute in Seocheon, Chungnam, and the National Marine Science Museum in Uljin, Gyeongbuk.
Additionally, with the opening of the '2023 National Incheon Marine Museum' and the 2025 Chungbuk Cheongju Future Marine Science Museum, national marine museums will be operated in five regional zones including Gyeongnam, Gyeongbuk, Chungnam, Chungbuk, and Incheon.
However, in the Jeonnam region, which has the largest number of islands (2,165) nationwide and holds about half of the total coastline (45%) and tidal flats (42%), there is no plan to establish a national marine museum.
Therefore, Assemblyman Yoon Jae-gap requested that 300 million KRW for research expenses for the establishment of the (tentative name) National Ttangkkeut Marine and Fisheries Museum be reflected in next year's budget. Haenam Ttangkkeut is a treasure trove of marine and ecological resources and a sacred place of marine history and culture, including Admiral Yi Sun-sin, Jang Bogo, and the Sambyeolcho.
If the 'Ttangkkeut Marine Natural History Museum,' which already holds over 50,000 marine and fisheries materials, is converted into a national museum, it will be possible to establish the first marine and fisheries museum in the Jeonnam region with a small budget and time.
Assemblyman Yoon said, "I hope to establish the first national marine and fisheries museum in the Jeonnam region at Haenam Ttangkkeut, the end of the land and the beginning of marine and fisheries, to create tourism synergy effects, raise marine awareness, and serve as a place for education on the development of the marine industry."
