[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jun-yi] 'Political rookie' former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol was officially confirmed as the People Power Party's presidential candidate just four months after entering politics.
On the 5th, the People Power Party announced the results of party member voting and a general public opinion poll confirming former Prosecutor General Yoon as the candidate at the '2nd Party Convention' held at the Baekbeom Kim Koo Memorial Hall in Yongsan-gu, Seoul. Confirmed as the sole candidate of the People Power Party, Yoon will face off in the general election against Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party presidential candidate who was previously confirmed as the ruling party's unified candidate.
Candidate Yoon has a long history as a 'special investigation prosecutor' and has lived a tumultuous life. Born in Seoul in 1960, Yoon graduated from Chung-Ang High School and Seoul National University Law School. After nine attempts, he passed the bar exam in 1991 at the age of 31 and began his career as a prosecutor. Throughout his prosecutorial career, he worked in the special investigation division, conducting investigations that led to the arrest of high-ranking figures such as former Chungnam Governor Ahn Hee-jung, Changshin Textile CEO Kang Geum-won, and Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Mong-koo during the Roh Moo-hyun administration.
In 2013, during the Park Geun-hye administration, Yoon was effectively demoted when he was transferred to the Daegu High Prosecutors' Office for 'failure to report to superiors' during the investigation of the National Intelligence Service case. However, three years later in 2016, he gained renewed attention by joining the special investigation team for the 'Park Geun-hye-Choi Soon-sil Gate' scandal. Subsequently, with the inauguration of the Moon Jae-in administration, he was appointed head of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office and became well-known for leading investigations that resulted in the arrest of former President Lee Myung-bak and Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong.

During his time as a special investigation prosecutor, he aggressively pursued investigations targeting the core of the Moon administration, including allegations of the Blue House's cover-up of Yoo Jae-soo's inspection and the ordered investigation of the Ulsan mayor. Despite sharp questioning from opposition lawmakers during his confirmation hearing for Prosecutor General, he showed steadfastness by stating, "I do not pledge loyalty to any person," earning him the reputation of a 'hearing star.' In 2019, despite opposition from the Liberty Korea Party and Bareun Party, President Moon Jae-in appointed Yoon as Prosecutor General.
After clashing with the current administration over the Cho Kuk issue and conflicts with former Minister of Justice Choo Mi-ae, Yoon stepped down as Prosecutor General and entered politics in June of this year. Emphasizing 'fairness and common sense' as his identity, Yoon joined the People Power Party after declaring his candidacy for president.

Throughout the election period, he maintained the top spot in opposition candidate support ratings, attracting national attention. However, he also became the subject of heated debate due to a series of gaffes and controversies within his campaign. Recently, following remarks defending former President Chun Doo-hwan and the 'dog apple' controversy, he faced the risk of losing his candidacy to rival People Power Party lawmaker Hong Joon-pyo. With lingering questions about his values and vision as a presidential candidate, the key issue now is how well he can overcome controversies regarding his qualifications moving forward.
