New York Mayor-Elect: Making New York the "Capital of Cryptocurrency"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] Eric Adams, the mayor-elect of New York City, USA, announced that he will receive his first three months' salary in Bitcoin and aims to make New York the "center city of the cryptocurrency industry" after taking office.
On the 4th (local time), Adams tweeted, "I will receive my first three months' salary as mayor in Bitcoin," adding, "New York will become the hub of the cryptocurrency industry and other rapidly growing innovative industries."
Regarding this declaration, CNBC reported that it was a response to Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, who recently won re-election and tweeted that he would receive his "first paycheck" of his second term "100% in Bitcoin," by stating "three months' salary."
CNBC evaluated that Adams showed his intention to compete with Miami for the title of the "cryptocurrency capital" of the United States during his term. Mayor Suarez has begun efforts to attract top talent as part of his pro-cryptocurrency policies.
Miami has been hosting numerous cryptocurrency-related conferences, including the largest-ever Bitcoin event "Bitcoin 2021," attracting many professionals.
Currently, Miami is considered to be far ahead in the competition for the "cryptocurrency capital" title. Thanks to Mayor Suarez's active pro-cryptocurrency policies, many cryptocurrency-related startups, venture companies, and exchanges are relocating to Miami or opening branches there.
The day before, Adams stated in an interview with Bloomberg Radio that he would engage in friendly competition with Mayor Suarez and indicated that he might consider measures similar to Miami's launch of "MiamiCoin."
Adams added that after taking office, he plans to "examine what is hindering the development of cryptocurrency in New York."
Currently, a bill is pending in the New York State Legislature that would halt Bitcoin mining operations until their environmental impact can be assessed.
Bitcoin prices fell about 3% that afternoon, trading near $61,260.
