IEL Science Launches Three Types of EV Charging Smart Streetlight Systems
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] IL Science, a KOSDAQ-listed smart optical tech company, announced on the 4th that it has launched three types of EV charging smart streetlight systems.
IL Science's EV charging smart streetlight system was released in response to the surge in charger demand due to the expansion of the electric vehicle market. According to Korea Investment & Securities, the global electric vehicle sales share in the automobile market is expected to rise to 45% by 2030, with over 39 million units sold annually. Accordingly, the electric vehicle charger market is also projected to grow rapidly to a scale of 166 trillion KRW.
However, compared to the speed of electric vehicle adoption and charger demand, the domestic electric vehicle charging infrastructure remains insufficient. In particular, there are calls for urgent expansion of slow chargers centered around major living hubs based on charging efficiency and convenience.
Slow chargers can be easily used in places where electric vehicle users stay for long periods, such as residences and workplaces. They consume less power than fast chargers and have the advantage of being favorable for battery life management.
Targeting this, the launched EV charging streetlight system uses a slow charging method that utilizes the constant power of general roads or residential streetlights, applying IL Science’s patented technology. It is designed by installing a metered outlet in the charging terminal box of the streetlight, where vehicles are connected to a 220V electric outlet equipped with a metering device and used in conjunction with a smartphone application.
It charges electricity sufficient for about 10 to 20 km of driving per hour of use, and the power supply control function prevents unauthorized power use and fires caused by overcurrent.
The products were launched in three types: basic, multifunctional smart, and hybrid multifunctional smart. Among them, the multifunctional smart type combines a fine dust indicator light, enabling fine dust measurement and pollution level display. A CCTV module for crime prevention is also installed, allowing for various uses. The hybrid multifunctional smart type is equipped with solar modules and wind turbines, enabling the use of eco-friendly energy as charging power for electric vehicles in addition to constant power. These products are expected to be supplied mainly to major living hubs such as residential areas, parking lots, and rest areas through local governments in the future.
The EV charging smart streetlight system is based on a patent filed by CEO Song Seong-geun in 2010 while he was studying electronic engineering at Gachon University. CEO Song predicted that an era of charging electric vehicles using streetlights on roads and residential areas would open and filed related patent technology.

An IL Science official said, “With the global transition to electric vehicles, concerns have arisen that the lack of charging facilities in Korea could be an obstacle to the expansion of electric vehicle adoption, and the need to expand chargers is emerging. If innovative charging infrastructure using streetlights, which have high accessibility for electric vehicle users, is established, it is expected to dramatically improve such issues.”
