Gyeongnam University Institute of Far Eastern Studies Holds Seminar Evaluating and Analyzing 10 Years of Kim Jong-un Regime
The Institute of Far Eastern Studies at Gyeongnam National University is conducting an international academic webinar with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation in Germany.
View original image[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Sang-hyun] On the 2nd, the Far East Asia Research Institute of Gyeongnam National University jointly held an international academic conference (webinar, simultaneous interpretation) with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation of Germany at the institute's main conference room in Samcheong-dong, Seoul.
The academic conference, held under the theme "Evaluation and Prospects of the 10 Years of the Kim Jong-un Regime in North Korea," was divided into two sessions: evaluation and prospects in the political, economic, and social fields, and evaluation and prospects in military and foreign relations.
In the first session, Professor Ahn Kyung-mo of the Korea National Defense University presented on "The Governing Ideology and National Strategy in the Kim Jong-un Era," Research Fellow Kim Il-han of Dongguk University DMZ Peace Center spoke on "From Military-First to the People: Evaluation and Prospects of the National Normalization Strategy," and HK Research Professor Jeon Young-sun of Konkuk University’s Unification Humanities Research Group presented on "Evaluation of North Korea’s Socio-Cultural Control Strategy: 'Creation of Desire' vs. 'Ideological and Cultural Censorship'."
In response, invited Research Fellow Hirai Hisashi of the Far East Asia Research Institute, Professor Lim Eul-chul of the Far East Asia Research Institute, and Professor Jung Young-chul of Sogang University each conducted discussions.
In the second session, Associate Research Fellow Jang Cheol-woon of the Institute for Unification Studies presented on "Evaluation and Prospects of North Korea’s Military Power and the Changing Role of the Military," Visiting Professor Shin Bong-seop of Kwangwoon University spoke on "Evaluation and Prospects of North Korea-China Relations during Kim Jong-un’s Rule," Professor Park Won-gon of Ewha Womans University presented on "10 Years of North Korea-US Relations in the Kim Jong-un Era: A Duet of Disconnection and Continuity," and Center Director Jeong Seong-jang of the Sejong Institute’s North Korea Research Center presented on "Evaluation and Prospects of the Kim Jong-un Regime’s Policy toward South Korea over 10 Years."
In response, Professor Hwang Il-do of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy’s Institute for Foreign Affairs and Security, Professor Lee Sang-man of the Far East Asia Research Institute, Professor Jeong Gye-young of Fudan University in China, and Professor Kim Hyung-seok of Daejin University each conducted discussions.
Lee Gwan-se, Director of the Far East Asia Research Institute, said, "The comprehensive evaluation of the 10 years of the Kim Jong-un regime from the perspectives of continuity and change is important for assessing the internal stability of the regime, including the durability of the North Korean system and the leadership of the supreme leader." He added, "Today’s seminar will also be a very meaningful occasion to suggest the direction of the next South Korean government’s unification and North Korea policies."
