COP26 Summit Chair Program 'Action and Solidarity'... "Cooperating to Help Developing Countries Transition to Low-Carbon Economies"
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] President Moon Jae-in, who is visiting the United Kingdom to attend the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), stated on the 1st (local time) at the chair country program meeting "Action and Solidarity" that "All 243 local governments in Korea have jointly declared carbon neutrality by 2050, the first in the world."
President Moon said, "The Korean people have started a dialogue with the Earth. They are listening to the Earth's voice, acting in various ways in their respective places, and standing in solidarity."
President Moon explained, "Religious groups and civic organizations have launched a nationwide carbon neutrality practice movement. Companies are participating in RE100, expanding investments in renewable energy, and accelerating carbon neutrality."
President Moon pledged, "Korea officially commits today to raising its 2030 NDC."
President Moon emphasized, "It means reducing greenhouse gases by more than 40% compared to 2018," adding, "It is a very challenging goal that requires steep reductions in a short period." He added, "It also includes a 30% methane reduction plan. Korea will join the ‘Global Methane Pledge’."
President Moon said, "Leveraging Korea's growth experience, we will actively cooperate to help developing countries transition to low-carbon economies. We will continue to support climate finance through the Green Climate Fund and the Global Green Growth Institute, and expand cooperation in the green technology sector through the ‘Climate Technology Centre and Network’."
President Moon explained, "We will increase Green New Deal ODA and continue support through public-private partnerships of P4G."
President Moon said, "Korea supports the spirit of environmental soundness that climate action must not cause an increase in greenhouse gases under any circumstances," adding, "As a country that developed from a developing country to an advanced country, we will actively contribute to achieving a balanced agreement between the ‘reductions’ desired by developed countries and the ‘adaptation and finance’ desired by developing countries."
