Suspended Sentence for Bribery Yoo Jae-su... Appeal Trial Verdict on the 5th
[Asia Economy Reporter Bae Kyunghwan] The appellate court ruling for Yoo Jae-soo, former Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs of Busan City, who was indicted on charges of receiving bribes worth tens of millions of won from financial company representatives, will be announced this week. In the first trial, Yoo was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison with a 3-year probation and fined 90 million won.
According to the legal community on the 31st, the Seoul High Court Criminal Division 1-1 (Presiding Judges Lee Seung-ryeon, Eom Sang-pil, and Shim Dam) will deliver the verdict on the 5th morning for Yoo, who was indicted on charges of bribery, corruption after bribery, and violation of the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act.
Yoo was prosecuted on charges of receiving money and benefits worth about 47 million won from four financial industry workers related to his duties from August 2010 to November 2018, during his tenure as Director of the Financial Services Commission Policy Bureau and Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs of Busan City.
The first trial sentenced Yoo to 1 year and 6 months in prison with a 3-year probation, fined him 90 million won, and ordered a confiscation of about 42 million won. The court judged, "Former Deputy Mayor Yoo repeatedly received bribes from donors who operated companies directly or indirectly influenced by the Financial Services Commission, which is highly condemnable."
However, Yoo was acquitted of the charge of corruption after bribery. Additionally, the court found him not guilty of receiving job opportunities for his younger brother and internship opportunities for his high school son from the companies.
The prosecution appealed the first trial. In particular, they argued that the first trial's judgment that there was no implicit solicitation was incorrect, and that charges such as employment solicitation for his younger brother, corruption after bribery related to the awarding of a certificate of commendation, and payment of officetel usage fees should be recognized as guilty.
