Facebook Changes Name... Social Media Mocks 'Meta is Dead'
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] Facebook, the world's largest social media company that changed its name to 'Meta,' is becoming a subject of ridicule among Israeli social media users.
On this day, posts appeared on social media sharing images of Facebook rebranded as 'Meta,' which means 'dead' in Hebrew, accompanied by mocking comments.
One user on Twitter posted, "Is Facebook's name change to 'Meta' a message about the company's fate?" mocking the move.
Not only in Israel but also social media users from other countries are ridiculing Facebook's brand overhaul using the hashtag '#FacebookDead.'
Another Twitter user wrote, "They didn't (properly) do branding research," and Dr. Nirit Weiss-Blatt, who studies IT journalism and public relations, tweeted, "In Hebrew, Meta means 'dead.' The Jewish community will mock this name for years to come."
Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's CEO, announced on the 28th that the company would change its name to Meta and expand its business focus to the 'Metaverse,' a three-dimensional virtual world integrated with the real world.
