'Marohaeyuk Sea Kim Aquaculture Dispute' 2nd Trial Court Rules in Favor of Jindo
Haenam-gun Fishermen Filed an Appeal Last March... Appeal Dismissal Decision Issued
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] The appeal trial of the 30-year-long seaweed farming site dispute between fishermen of Jindo County and Haenam County ended in favor of Jindo.
On the 27th, in the case of the 'Maro Sea Area Fishery Rights Dispute Related to the Performance of Event Contract Procedures and Fishery Site Delivery Lawsuit,' which involves the conflict between fishermen of Jindo County and Haenam County over the golden fishing grounds of Maro Sea Area (Manho Sea Area), the court ruled in favor of the fishermen of Jindo County in the second trial, following the first trial.
The Maro Sea Area fishery rights dispute, which has continued since 1994, had a mediation decision in 2010 and lasted for more than 10 years. Following the expiration of the aquaculture license period, Haenam Suhyup and Haenam fishermen filed a lawsuit again in February last year to enforce the event contract procedures.
The court ruled in favor of Jindo County in the first trial held in February, but Haenam County fishermen filed an appeal in March, dissatisfied with the decision.
After seven months of litigation, the court dismissed Haenam County fishermen's appeal on the 27th, stating there was no reason for the appeal.

A representative from the Jindo County Fisheries Support Division said, "Following the first trial ruling, the court confirmed in the appeal trial that the Maro Sea Area is clearly part of Jindo waters. Since it has been definitively proven that the aquaculture rights belong to Jindo fishermen, we plan to provide administrative support so that fishermen can start seaweed farming as soon as possible." He added, "Depending on whether Haenam County files a further appeal, we will prepare a joint response plan with Jindo County Suhyup and fishermen and take legal action."
