Iran Nuclear Negotiations... Resumption with '4+1 Group' on the 21st
Iran Parliament "Dialogue in Brussels"
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The Iran nuclear negotiations, which had been at a standstill since the inauguration of Iranian President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi last June, will resume on the 21st.
On the 17th (local time), Iranian lawmaker Ahmad Alireza Beigui held a private meeting with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and stated, according to AFP and other agencies, "Dialogue with the 4+1 group will resume in Brussels, Belgium."
The 4+1 group mentioned by lawmaker Alireza Beigui consists of the four permanent members of the United Nations Security Council?United Kingdom, China, France, Russia?and Germany.
Since April, Iran and the 4+1 group have been negotiating to restore the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA - Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action), from which former U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew. The U.S. has participated indirectly through European allies due to Iran's opposition, but negotiations were suspended following the inauguration of hardliner President Raisi in June.
However, with U.S. President Joe Biden continuously urging Iran to return to the negotiating table, momentum has picked up again.
Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy leading the restoration talks, said the day before, "I am ready to meet with Iranian leaders in Brussels." Earlier, Saeed Khatibzadeh, spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also stated, "Negotiations will resume by the second week of next month at the latest."
