Sejong City Promotes Designation of Central Park Phase 2 Area as 'Local and National Garden'
[Asia Economy (Sejong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Sejong City is drawing up a blueprint to have the second phase of Sejong Central Park designated as a provincial garden and ultimately as a national garden.
According to the city on the 15th, Sejong currently boasts a green space ratio of 52%, with 435 parks and green areas within the region. However, there are no sites yet designated as provincial or national gardens.
Nationwide, three locations?Semiwon in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi Province; Juknokwon in Damyang, Jeollanam-do; and Geochang Changpowon in Gyeongsangnam-do?are designated as provincial gardens, while two sites?Suncheonman in Jeollanam-do and Taehwagang in Ulsan?are designated and managed as national gardens.
Accordingly, the city plans to develop the second phase of Sejong Central Park as an urban park with a garden concept, first obtaining designation as a Sejong-style provincial garden, and ultimately having it designated and managed as a national garden like Suncheonman and Taehwagang.
Additionally, to expand garden infrastructure, the city envisions selecting five idle sites of social welfare facilities annually to create small-scale gardens.
The city intends to continuously expand lifestyle-oriented gardens by, for example, creating outdoor gardens within multi-use facilities such as the healing garden at Sejong Chungnam National University Hospital by next year, allowing citizens to experience gardens in their daily lives.
Meanwhile, Sejong is also scheduled to host the ‘Garden Industry Expo’ next year. The expo is organized by the Korea Forest Service to promote the garden industry and spread garden culture, and Sejong was selected in August as the host city for the third expo.
Following the selection, the city will receive 500 million won in national funding to hold the expo for 10 days in October next year around Sejong Central Park under the theme “Falling in Love with Sejong, the Lake, and Gardens.”
