"1GB Video in 10 Seconds" Samsung Electronics Sets New Record for '5G Upload Speed'
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] Samsung Electronics has set a global industry record for upload speeds using 5G mobile communication technology.
Samsung Electronics announced on the 15th that it recently demonstrated 5G technology in collaboration with telecommunications company Verizon and wireless communication technology company Qualcomm in Plano, Texas, USA, achieving a data upload speed of 711 Mbps. This speed allows uploading a 1GB video in about 10 seconds, which is approximately twice as fast as previous data transmission speeds.
The demonstration utilized Samsung Electronics' 28GHz band 5G base station, 2.1GHz band 4G base station, and virtualized core (vCore), with the speed measured through a test smartphone equipped with Qualcomm's 4th generation 5G millimeter-wave modem-RF system (Snapdragon X65).
This enables real-time high-definition video capture and uploading to the cloud or SNS anytime and anywhere. In particular, it allows easy sharing of vivid live footage from venues such as concert halls and sports stadiums, facilitating rapid production and dissemination of diverse content. It is also useful in remote work environments by enabling easy sharing of large files and high-definition video conferencing.
Since high-resolution video uploads are possible, it is expected to be widely used in enterprise 5G services such as detecting defective products in production processes using video analysis artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
The reason for such fast upload speeds is Samsung Electronics' introduction of carrier aggregation technology that uses two or more frequency bands together in its millimeter-wave compact macro equipment, doubling the existing 200MHz upload bandwidth, and the application of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology that uses multiple antennas simultaneously.
Lee Junhee, Vice President and Head of Development Team at Samsung Electronics' Network Business Division, said, "Through this ultra-high-speed upload demonstration in cooperation with Verizon and Qualcomm, we have taken a step closer to realizing differentiated 5G services and immersive user experiences," adding, "We will lead various 5G technology innovations that will revolutionize communication environments for subscribers and enterprises through new technology development and collaboration."
Adam Koeppe, Executive Vice President of Technology Planning at Verizon, said, "While rapidly securing mid-band 5G coverage, we are accelerating investments in millimeter-wave as a core differentiated service that can provide new experiences and solutions to subscribers and enterprises," adding, "We have built more than 30,000 millimeter-wave base stations to date and plan to further expand investments."
