Jeonbuk Province Signs Investment Agreement Worth 121.3 Billion KRW with Unittest Co., Ltd.
Construction of a 66,000㎡ Factory in Saemangeum Industrial Complex... Creating Over 300 Jobs
[Jeonju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] Jeonbuk Province announced on the 14th that it has signed an agreement with Unittest Co., Ltd. to establish a manufacturing plant for large-scale mass production of 'Perovskite Solar Cells' in the Saemangeum National Industrial Complex.
The signing ceremony was attended by about 40 people, including Unittest Co., Ltd. CEO Kim Jong-hyun, Jeollabuk-do Deputy Governor for Political Affairs Shin Won-sik, Saemangeum Development Agency Director Yang Chung-mo, and Gunsan Mayor Kang Im-jun.
Through this agreement, Unittest Co., Ltd. plans to invest 121.3 billion KRW by 2024 to build a perovskite solar cell manufacturing plant on a 66,000㎡ (20,000 pyeong) site in Saemangeum Industrial Complex District 1, and employ about 300 workers.
Perovskite solar cells have higher power generation efficiency compared to first-generation silicon solar cells or second-generation thin-film solar cells, and their manufacturing cost is very low, at about 20-30% of that of conventional solar cells.
They are expected to lead the next-generation solar power market, such as building-integrated photovoltaics and vehicle-integrated photovoltaics.
Unitest Co., Ltd., which mainly produces semiconductor inspection equipment, has been steadily developing next-generation solar cell technology in preparation for the energy transition trend toward renewable energy, including the RE100 campaign and the government's 2050 carbon neutrality promotion strategy.
It is reported that the company decided to invest considering the locational advantages and policy strengths of Saemangeum, which is growing as a core area for new renewable energy and solar power generation.
Jeollabuk-do Deputy Governor for Political Affairs Shin Won-sik said, "I hope that Unittest Co., Ltd.'s newly launched perovskite material solar module business will grow into a forward base for Korea's renewable energy industry," and added, "We will actively support the success of the green energy business through cooperation with related organizations in the Saemangeum Industrial Complex, which is emerging as a new industry hub."
