Gyeonggi Firefighters Yeon-sook Lee and Jang Nam-il Selected as 'S.A.V.E. Heroes'
[Asia Economy (Fire Department) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Fire Lieutenant Lee Yeon-sook and Fire Lieutenant Jang Nam-il, affiliated with the Disaster Comprehensive Command Center of the Gyeonggi-do Fire and Disaster Headquarters, have been selected as 'S.A.V.E. Heroes.'
'S.A.V.E. Heroes' was introduced in 2018 by the National Fire Agency in partnership with Bestian Foundation Co., Ltd. to encourage firefighters who risk their lives to protect the safety and lives of the public, including those with special merits. Every year, seven heroes are selected and awarded.
Fire Lieutenant Lee Yeon-sook began emergency medical activities in 1997 and is a representative paramedic of Gyeonggi-do Fire Department who has saved countless patients' lives over 24 years. In particular, since October 2019, she has worked as an emergency situation manager at the Disaster Comprehensive Command Center, providing emergency consultations and first aid guidance for over 9,000 cases, successfully resuscitating 11 cardiac arrest patients, earning the 'Heart Saver' certification 11 times. The Heart Saver certification is awarded to paramedics and ordinary citizens who save the lives of cardiac arrest patients through emergency treatments such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation.
Fire Lieutenant Jang Nam-il was appointed as a fire officer in 1991 and responded to major incidents such as the Sampoong Department Store fire, engaging in fire suppression and rescue operations. At the Gwanggyo officetel construction site fire in 2017, he arrived first on the scene and conducted rescue operations, sustaining second- and third-degree burns on several parts of his body.
