The Beauty of Traditional Korean, Chinese, and Japanese Costumes Filled in Suncheonman National Garden
[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Heo Seok) announced on the 12th that it successfully held the ‘Korea-China-Japan Traditional Costume Fashion Show’ on the 8th at the French Garden within Suncheonman National Garden.
Co-hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Suncheon City, and Kim Hye-sun Hanbok Workshop, the event was attended by key figures such as Lee Jin-sik, Director of Cultural Policy at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and Kim Ju-yong, Director of the Veterans Affairs Office.
The fashion show opened with a performance by Ensemble Sinawi, filling the French Garden with the beautiful gugum (vocal sounds) of traditional Korean musician Oh Jung-hae.
Following a beautiful Korean traditional dance performance by 10 professional dancers against the garden backdrop, a royal court costume runway stage was held featuring 16 citizen models and celebrities such as Chae Shi-ra and Kim Chang-ok.
Additionally, representing Suncheon City, Mayor Heo Seok and Suncheon City Council Chairman Heo Yoo-in participated as models, drawing attention.
Next, the ‘Harmony Stage’ featured traditional Chinese ‘Qipao’ and Japanese ‘Kimono’ costumes together, creating a stage that harmonized the traditional costumes of the three countries, fitting the purpose of the East Asian Cultural City project.
Moreover, the event’s atmosphere was further elevated by performances from Obangsin and Shin Seung-tae alongside a Korean party dress stage reinterpreting traditional hanbok, and a popular singer Ali’s performance with 10 dancers.
To prevent the spread of COVID-19, on-site spectators were limited, and the event was conducted in a hybrid format with live streaming on Suncheon City’s YouTube channel.
A netizen who watched via YouTube expressed, “It is very unfortunate not to be able to see such a beautiful performance in person.”
Also, a citizen model who participated through an open call said, “I feel very honored to participate as a Suncheon citizen in this international exchange project called East Asian Cultural City.”
Mayor Heo Seok stated, “This event became very meaningful in connection with the Hanbok Culture Week starting nationwide this week,” and added, “We will continue to strive to promote various projects related to hanbok, which embodies the spirit of Korea.”
