Lee Jae-myung, Close Race Within Margin of Error Against Yoon Seok-yeol and Hong Joon-pyo

View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, was found to be in a close race within the margin of error against both Yoon Seok-yeol, the former Prosecutor General and presidential candidate of the People Power Party, and Hong Joon-pyo, a member of the same party, in one-on-one matchups.
In a hypothetical presidential race conducted by the Korea Society Opinion Institute on October 8-9, Lee recorded 35.8% support in a one-on-one contest against Yoon, who received 33.2%, showing a close race within the margin of error.
In a hypothetical matchup between Lee and Hong, Lee received 35.2% and Hong 33.0%, also showing a tight result.
When asked about suitability among the four candidates who passed the second cutoff in the People Power Party presidential primary, Hong ranked highest with 27.5%. He was followed by Yoon with 25.5%, former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min with 10.5%, former Jeju Governor Won Hee-ryong with 5.1%, and Ahn Cheol-soo, leader of the People’s Party, with 4.1%. Those who responded “no suitable candidate” accounted for 13.8%, and 3.3% said they did not know.
Party support stood at 35.7% for the People Power Party and 32.5% for the Democratic Party of Korea. Compared to last week, the Democratic Party rose by 2.7 percentage points while the People Power Party fell by 1.7 percentage points, narrowing the gap between the two parties from 7.6 percentage points last week to 3.2 percentage points.

This regular opinion poll was conducted over two days, October 8-9, on 1,002 adult men and women nationwide aged 18 and over, commissioned by TBS. It used 100% wireless ARS (automatic response system) with safe numbers provided by the Central Election Commission. The sampling error is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level, and the response rate was 6.1%. Weighting was applied by gender, region, and age based on the resident registration population as of the end of September 2021 from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (cell weighting).
