[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Seohyun] It has become a hot topic that the prestigious Oxford English Dictionary in the UK has newly registered 26 Korean words, including 'Hanbok.' Regarding this, Professor Seokyung Deok of Sungshin Women's University stated, "I think it is even more meaningful amid recent unfounded claims from China that Hanbok originated in China."
On the 8th, Professor Seo said on his Facebook, "The newly registered 'Hanbok' in the Oxford English Dictionary is introduced as 'traditional Korean clothing.'"
The Oxford English Dictionary newly added 26 Korean words, including Hanbok, oppa, unni, nuna, samgyeopsal, japchae, gimbap, Konglish, manhwa, mukbang, aegyo, banchan, bulgogi, chimaek, daebak, dongchimi, fighting, galbi, and more. In response, Professor Seo evaluated, "It is very encouraging that various Korean cultural words have been registered as the 'Hallyu' wave spreads worldwide."
Recently, the British BBC analyzed this as a result of the Hallyu craze fueled by the success of the group BTS's music and the Netflix drama 'Squid Game.'
American CNN also introduced, "The word 'Hallyu' is used to express the entertainment trend sweeping Asia and now the world, and this word has now been added to the Oxford English Dictionary."
Meanwhile, the Chinese portal site Baidu (百度) recently called Hanbok 'Hanfu' (漢服) and distorted it by claiming "China is the origin," while introducing it as one of China's national intangible cultural heritages as traditional clothing of the ethnic Korean minority in China.
